Soapbox Players and Red Wing PFLAG Present “8”

Soapbox Players and Red Wing PFLAG are partnering to produce “8” at the Sheldon Theatre on September “8” at 7:00 PM. Min MartinOakes (Miracle on 34th Street, Little Women, Shirley Valentine) directs this piece about the controversial California Proposition 8 law and the trial it provoked.

“8” was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar), in cooperation with Broadway Impact and the American Foundation for Equal Rights. The play will be viewed nation-wide in a series of staged readings, including this local production. “8” is the true story about Proposition 8, the California law that took marriage rights away from LGBT couples in 2008, and the Perry trial that followed. The play is based on the actual trials, with words coming directly from the transcript, and observations and interviews of those directly involved in the trial.

Cost:  $17.50 adults/ $11.50 students
Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Sheldon Box Office 651-388-8700 or 800-899-5789, online at www.sheldontheatre.org, or at the door.

 ————–

Soapbox Players was established in 2004; its mission statement is: Soapbox Players offers sometimes juicy, always thought provoking, financially accommodating old and new works of live theater that will keep you on the edge of your seat and in front of your mind.

The Red Wing Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) started in Red Wing nearly 20 years ago after several local families with gay children came together to help each other and then others better understand homosexuality. The local organization has grown to over 50 members and many supporting friends and neighbors. The mission of PFLAG is to promote the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
