August 16, 2012 – Saint Paul, MN – Freedom to Marry, a national coalition partner of Minnesotans United for All Families, begins running a new television ad today in the Twin Cities and Duluth as part of its Why Marriage Matters educational campaign. The television ad, “Grandparents,” features Duluth couple Yvonne and Fred Peterson discussing what their marriage of 59 years means to them, how Fred served to protect the freedoms of all people, and how no one should be told it’s illegal to marry the person you love.
The couple has been married since 1953, a period Fred calls “the happiest years” of his whole life. Describing the journey the Petersons, whose grandson is gay, have been on regarding the freedom to marry, Yvonne says, “If someone would have asked me if gay people should get married, I would have said no.”
Fred Peterson concludes, “I fought for the basic freedoms of all people … The world is changing. Gay and lesbian people want to get married for the same reason that I wanted to marry my wife. Why shouldn’t other people be able to enjoy the happiness and love we’ve enjoyed through our lifetime?”
“We applaud Freedom to Marry for their educational campaign, which is changing thousands of hearts and minds in Minnesota,” said Richard Carlbom, campaign manager for Minnesotans United for All Families. “The Peterson family are like many in Minnesota right now. They have been on a journey about how they feel about marriage for same-sex couples. And over time, they’ve come to the conclusion that same-sex couples want to marry for similar reasons to straight couples: to make a lifelong commitment to one another based on mutual love and responsibility.”
Why Marriage Matters – a project of Freedom to Marry – is a national public education campaign in partnership with state-based groups and other national organizations designed to share stories and foster conversation about the love and commitment that forms the basis for marriage.
