Lawyers United for All Families Launches in Opposition to Proposed Constitutional Amendment
Former Vice President of the United States Walter F. Mondale & Former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen A. Blatz pen letter opposing the proposed marriage amendment
March 13th, 2012 – Saint Paul, MN – Opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to permanently ban marriage for same-sex couples continued to grow with the formation of a bold new outreach to Minnesota’s legal community. Former Vice President of the United States Walter F. Mondale and Former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen A. Blatz spearheaded the launch of Lawyers United for All Families with a letter to their colleagues, released today.
“Our constitution is a hard-earned gift from those who preceded us, and an enduring promise to those who will follow us,” said Vice President Walter Mondale. “It should be used to protect individual liberty, not to take it away.”
“I’m thrilled to hear about this effort to mobilize within our state’s legal community,” said Archana Nath, an attorney at Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly LLP in Minneapolis. “Minnesota’s state constitution should embody the best traditions of our state and serves a higher purpose to protect the rights of all Minnesota citizens. This amendment would enshrine one particular view of family law permanently into our state constitution – a dangerous, unprecedented and wholly unnecessary departure from Minnesota’s history of representative government. Minnesota’s legal community must stand united to defeat this harmful amendment.”
“At this crossroads in Minnesota’s history,” added Blatz, “we must not allow our state’s constitution to get caught up in the prevailing winds of the day. We may disagree on how best to recognize committed same-sex couples, but I believe quite firmly that legislating this issue by constitutional amendment is both inappropriate and a threat to the legacy of our state.”
This new group under the Minnesotans United for All Families campaign banner joins the Minnesota State Bar Association in strongly opposing the passage of this constitutional amendment. Additionally, the law firm of Lockridge Grindal Nauen PLLP has publicly opposed this amendment, and Baillon Thome Jozwiak Miller and Wanta LLP has formally joined the Minnesotans United for All Families coalition.
