June 19, 2012 – St. Paul, MN - In the midst of announcing a major summer launch at the Twin Cities Pride Festival, Minnesotans United for All Families announced today that it has raised $4.6 million from more than 19,000 individual donors since the beginning of the campaign. Since the last reporting deadline in January, the campaign has taken in an estimated $3.1 million from more than 16,000 individual donors, with more than 90 percent from within Minnesota.
To follow on this news, Minnesotans United will hold the first-ever Governor’s Pride Reception Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at 801 Washington Ave in Minneapolis.
“What this report shows is that the conversation we are having across this state is working, and that more and more, Minnesotans are coming to the conclusion that limiting the freedom to marry for same-sex couples is not how we do things in Minnesota,” said Richard Carlbom, campaign manager for Minnesotans United for All Families. “Minnesotans know that marriage is about love, commitment and responsibility, and no one would want to be told it’s illegal to marry the person you love.”
Minnesotans United for All Families is the official campaign to defeat the proposed amendment that would limit the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Minnesota. Today’s fundraising totals show that the campaign is quickly expanding the conversation with Minnesotans about how this amendment would single out and exclude a group of people from the freedom to marry, violating Minnesota’s long-held and basic principles of freedom and fairness.
“This is the largest and most energetic grassroots campaign in the history of our state,” continued Carlbom. “We know that we have a tough road ahead, and we are making strategic investments in continuing this conversation in every corner of the state. The more Minnesotans talk about this amendment, the more they see that this would limit basic freedoms for some Minnesotans, and the more likely they are to vote no in November.”
