07/02/2012 – Saint Paul, MN – In response to General Mills’ decision to become one of the first Fortune 500 companies in Minnesota to come out in opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to limit the freedom to marry for committed same-sex couples, more than 80,000 people from across the country have signed online petitions thanking General Mills for its bold leadership and corporate courage.
On the night that General Mills CEO Ken Powell announced General Mills’ opposition to the amendment, Minnesotans United for All Families launched an online petition thanking the Fortune 500 giant for its decision. Building on that momentum, the Human Rights Campaign – one of Minnesotans United for All Families’ earliest coalition partners – launched a national petition last week that has since attracted more than 70,000 signers. Minnesotans United for All Families released the following statement today regarding the petitions and unprecedented amount of signers:
“Minnesotans and Americans are making it very clear that neutrality on important issues like this is not in the best interests of businesses or families, and amendments like this need to be defeated. We’re proud that General Mills – such a prominent and loved Minnesota company – chose to support all families by publicly opposing this hurtful, freedom-limiting amendment. Like the majority of Minnesotans, General Mills has acknowledged that marriage is about love, commitment and responsibility to family – and that no one should be told it is illegal to marry the person they love. Opposing this hurtful amendment is simply the right thing to do for all Minnesotans, and we join the more than 80,000 individuals who have applauded and thanked General Mills for doing the right thing.”
Minnesotans United for All Families is the official campaign working to defeat the amendment that seeks to limit the freedom to marry for committed same-sex couples. Composed of over 500 businesses, religious institutions, nonprofit and arts organizations, labor unions, political parties and current & former elected officials, Minnesotans United for All Families is one of the largest grassroots campaign in state history.
